STR4TA VISION 9

Long time friends and collaborators, Gilles Peterson and Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick say that they're initiating a "Brit-Funk revival" with their new project STR4TA. Following the success of the first singles 'Aspects' and 'Rhythm in Your Mind', the duo follow-up with 'Vision 9'. A slightly more dreamy and psychedelic soundscape features on the new single, comparing to the Sister Sledge-style funk of the first releases. Opening the track is a butterfly-like flute, which flutters in the wind, as a symbol splashes for anticipation. Soon, a funky bass groove emerges, ornamented with percussive guitar notes and a sea of colourful percussion. Sax has a solo moment, where it's engulfed by the atmospheric echo. As free as the wind, the vocal enhancements carry the spirit of 1970's Brazil. “The idea of the project was to capture that raw, moment to moment sound,” Maunick says, drawing a contrast to the touches of refinement he and his peers have acquired in the years since. Peterson says he was the one making sure things didn’t get too polished. “I was there at the back, telling them, no, leave it like that, cut it there, or just use that first take,” he says.
